Glass Sconces

Interior decorating is not only a job, it’s an art. It’s a challenge that requires more multitasking than what most people think. A good interior designer has to come up with a creative design that looks impressive, serves any practical purposes needed, respects the limits of the house’s or room’s infrastructure, and does all of these within the allocated budget.

Fortunately, there are many tools at his or her disposal. One of them that is commonly used in hotels is glass sconces.

Unlike most residential houses, hotels and other public buildings can afford to have a distinct look. Some of them have traditional and conservative styles, others look modern and fashionable, and yet others opt for a fresh, natural look.

Whatever the case, they usually have big lobbies and long hallways that need to be decorated. This is where glass sconces come in. They make excellent decorations and serve very well for illuminating the rooms, lobbies, or hallways in an efficient way.

Another reason why glass sconces are so popular is because they are very versatile and they come in literally hundreds of designs. You can find classic glass sconces with curves or glass containers for candles, or modern ones with flashy and shocking designs.

Glass sconces usually shoot their light upwards. The glass serves both as a semi barrier that blocks direct light into the eyes of the guests as well as a surface where images and motives can be molded, drawn or otherwise placed. By shooting the light upward, the lighting of the room is actually done by the reflection of the sum of lights of several glass sconces on the ceiling. This type of lighting is more subtle and relaxing than the direct lighting of a light bulb.

Lastly, when installed in a hallway, glass sconces should not only be nice to look at and illuminate the area. They should also feel proportionate with the hallway as well as within themselves. There are three basic rules to achieve this effect.

First of all, measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling. The height at which the glass sconces should be is three quarters of that distance. So, for example, if the height of the ceiling is 4 meters high, then the glass sconces should be located at 3 meters high.

Second, that very same distance should be the horizontal distance between one glass sconce and the next.

Finally, glass sconces should be alternated. One on the left, and then one on the right.

As you can imagine, this is not always easy, so sometimes concession should be made. However, always keep the same distance between sconces. Otherwise, the hallways will seem like it was badly planned.
