Brass Sconces

It is not known where or when sconces were originated, but it is suspected that they were the first type of permanent light fixture inside buildings. At first, they carried torches, but later one, it was discovered that candles were betters, since they burned in a much more controlled way, lasted longer, and created much less accidental fires. They were installed on walls, since it was much easier to light them that way.

When electricity was invented and proved to be a much reliable source of light, sconces lost their place as the main sources of light in buildings. However, they still survived, but for a different reason. Sconces are today considered a symbol of class and style and a great decoration item.

There are many types of sconces, but perhaps the classiest ones are brass sconces. Brass sconces are preferred for houses and rooms with a conservative and traditionalist look, although there are a few modern ones if you want a different look.

As with most types of sconces, brass sconces can be electrical or with candles. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Electrical brass sconces have the advantage and practicality of electricity, which makes them much easier to use and more reliable. In addition, they don’t represent a fire risk, like candle brass sconces do. On the other hand, they are more difficult to install, since they require to be connected to the electrical wiring system of the house. Sometimes their installation can be difficult, expensive, or even impossible.

Candle brass sconces can be installed almost anywhere since they don’t depend on outlets or sockets for their position. They also tend to be cheaper than electrical brass sconces. On the other hand, they’re more difficult to light, and they require all the basic precautions that any flame inside your house needs. For example, not leaving the candles unattended and teaching children not to play with the fire. And of course, never leave the matches next to the candle brass sconces if you have children or teens in the house. That’s just an accident waiting to happen. In fact, if you have children, consider installing your brass sconces high enough that they can’t reach it, even if it means it’ll be more difficult for you to light them.

Finally, in addition to lighting and decoration, brass sconces make a great complement to certain objects and settings. For example, you can enhance a painting or a portrait by placing two brass sconces at its sides. Or you can place increasingly higher sconces along a stair. It really depends on your taste and the way you want to decorate your home.
