Cabinet locks
If you are interested in having a curio cabinet or another form of display cabinet, cabinet locks are something that you should seriously consider. While many curio cabinets come with locks already built in, there are some cases where you will acquire a cabinet that does not have a lock and you want one in it. If this is the case with one of your cabinets, you can acquire two different types of locks to install on your cabinet.
The first type, and by far the most secure, is a built in lock. These locks require that you drill a hole into the door and frame of your cabinet and install the cabinet locks there. These locks use a key that turn the mechanism into the frame of the door. Because the locking mechanism is built into the door and frame, this type of lock is typically more secure than its counterpart.
If you want to install an easier type of lock, you can take a padlock and install a special hinge to your door that will lock the cabinet. These hinge based locks are not as pretty as a built in lock, and can be typically broken into a lot more easily. This is because all of the locking mechanisms are built and attached to the outside of the cabinet. This offers a weakness in the locking mechanism.
Before you purchase hinged locks or built in cabinet locks, you will need to make certain that your cabinet can support the lock. In the case of built in locks, you will only want to use true hardwood or softwood cabinets as pressurized wood cabinets do not tend to withstand the drilling required to install the lock. Furniture that uses sawdust and wood chips as the base with a veneer covering it will tend to break apart under drilling and should be avoided for built in locks. However, this type of furniture can withstand having outside padlocks screwed into the frame and door as this puts a lot less strain onto the cabinet.
If you are interested in installing cabinet locks, you can purchase a lock kit for your cabinet. These kits are for either built in or outside locks, and will include everything that you need to install the lock, except for the drill and screwdriver. You can also research the best methods of installing the locks without damaging your cabinets. All materials ordered will be delivered to the location of your choice.
